We warmed up and I spoke with the team about the things that they did well from last week, and what I wanted them to do more of. Tackling as a group was once again awesome, we consistently tackled them behind the gain line, with Sebas having the most tackles this week. We were able to string together several phases of play thanks to outstanding support. There were very few ball handling errors, with only a few miscues or bad decisions. The players were even able to keep themselves under control in the tackle to make a high percentage short pass or set the ball. The hustle to stay in support was consistent and players were making sure the ball was won before setting up to be another runner. Last week there were a lot of things I asked different players to try to work on, however, this week all I can say is keep up the good work and stay onsides. As a coaching staff we will work on kicking and lineouts. After being able to get the forwards organized on a scrum machine we were able to pushover their scrum a few times and steal their ball, the scrumming was awesome.

Game Recap

From the opening kickoff, Marshall kept feeding the forwards as we put together 10 phases for over 50 meters, only to turn the ball over.

All that hard work was nullified when we were penalized for being offsides. Orlando kicked the ball 50 meters down the field. Another offsides penalty set up Orlando for a kick at goal which they slotted.

Orl 3 Daytona 0

We secured a turnover and after several strong inside runs from Justin and Scott, newbie Gabe was able to find the try zone.

Orl 3 Daytona 5

Andy dug the ball out of a ruck and fed Jason with a crash ball. Justin had a break and was able to feed Isaac, who stepped inside and then cut back outside around the sucked in defense to score from about 40 meters out.

Orl 3 Daytona 10

There were then 2 scary moments within 2 minutes when Orlando players went down hard with shots to the head. Both players ended up being OK and will probably just need to take a week or two off and get a few stitches.

A maul got started near mid field that looked almost picture perfect, except the ball worked its way upwards not backwards. Eric almost lost it, but was able to keep possession and get it to Jason who made a break. Jason linked with Henry who started chugging down field and slipped it to Gabe at pace. I was quite impressed with that sequence for 3 brand new guys.

The quote of the day came after the game from henry about a long run that he made when he got to the outside and broke about four tackles ( it was an impressive run), “ If I wasn’t so fat I would have scored".

Later we had a our only true defensive lapse off another offside call. They took a quick penalty and the runner broke several tackles for a really long run that I thought he might score on. Daytona was not ready to give up yet and with the amount of players that turned and chased him we eventually caught him and recovered the ball. The whistle blew soon after that.

Final Orl 3 Daytona 10

The ball handling at 8,9,10, and 15 was solid the whole game. You guys played really well, despite the limited amount of practice time you guys looked like vets. Scott may have a new position if depth allows us that luxury. Andy made more plays this week from the correct side of ball. Luke you made some really good things happen with the limited amount of times you touched the ball.

Guys my hat is off to this group I was really impressed with everything that happened. I was so into the game I kept forgetting to call and update the other coaches.
